Howard Terpning, born in Illinois in 1927,
studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine
Arts and the American Academy of Art.  At
first he was known for impressive Time and
Newsweek covers, and some of the most
famous movie posters ever painted,
including Dr. Zhivago and The Sound Of
.  The call of the West was strong,
however, and in 1977 Terpning moved
from the East Coast to Arizona.  There he
has become famous for his award-winning
Western work. His images are powerful,
sweeping, and always beautiful, whether
he paints an individual or captures a mass
ceremony full of dust and thunder.
